Even with summer temps nice and warm, it’s time to think about overwintering crops.
It was bittersweet to harvest all of my potatoes last week and be left with an empty bed.
I have a neighbor who is fond of saying WINTER’S COMING. Oh thanks. So I did what any gardener maybe dreads to do…….plan for winter crops to replace nitrogen in the soil.
Last winter I planted Austrian Field Pea in most of my beds…….and boy, let me tell you Jack……those beds this summer are super performers.
So yesterday I not only planted Austrian Field Pea but also Winter Rye…….just to see if next summer I get even more pizazz out of my soil.
Sorry you can’t see anything pushing up through the soil just yet, but they’re there!
My pole beans look cool in the next bed but I have no beans yet. I bet my Austrian Pea and Winter Rye are up and smiling way before I get beans. Whatever. Stay tuned.
