Poor Ruby

Hello Gardenistas!

I’ve had an interesting two weeks with this girl……Ruby the Rhode Island Red…one of three here...

Mr. Denim found her on an 18 degree morning on the outside of the coop door…with a chunk of ice on her belly…and her head on the ground...

he had done a head count the night before as usual…and thought all 10 girls were inside the coop and accounted for.

Alas…she hadn’t made it inside the coop for whatever reason…and was stuck in ice outside trying to get inside the door.  Poor Ruby!

I wrapped her in a towel and immediately brought her inside the barn and put her next to the wood stove.  She was exhausted and I thought she was dying.

Most of the time her head was down with her eyes closed.  I guess I couldn’t bring myself to take photos of her like that.

{Cute dog water bowl, eh?…we had to improvise}

She was fatigued and stressed… we put her in a small dog crate…and a friend said to put a heating pad on low to keep her warm.

So we did…and kept watch.

For 3 days it was totally touch and go.

Most of the time her wings were flailing out like here...

so much fatigue she couldn’t even stand up to poop.

Ugh.

After a few days we would put her crate out in the greenhouse for a few hours at a time so she could enjoy sunshine...

the temps out there were about 65. We still had the heating pad going on low.

She still wouldn’t stand up.

She started drinking and eating slowly...

but often after a few bites she would tire and fall asleep in her food...

 We gave her lettuce...

and cucumbers….a favorite...

and sunflower seeds…another favorite.

Of course with regular chicken feed. And grit. And oyster shell.

Man, they’re finicky eaters…hehe.

It’s been slow going…she finally stood up to eat  after five days…started “talking” to us...

and finally today {after two weeks} we put her outside in the chicken yard to see her “sisters”...

I am concerned that they won’t accept her again…

and will peck at her if they think she’s injured...

so during the day for a few days we’ll have her out there in the yard...

but at night in the barn in her dog crate...

She didn’t walk around a lot today…but seemed to enjoy the outdoors and sunshine and fresh air...

and the other girls watching her from their run...

they probably thought she was privileged…haha

Hey Ruby…hang in there….you’ll be fine…you’ve been through a lot...

Tonite she’s back in her crate enjoying warmth and cucumbers...

{maybe cukes are like chocolate to chickens?!?}

Silly girl…get well...

I hope she starts laying eggs again...

And I hope her “sisters” accept her back after a two week absence...

I know she’s only a $3 chicken…but she went thru a lot…I hope for a happy ending to her saga...

…to be continued...
