Oh my goodness…I am so excited about my new DIY potting bench! The minute I saw these plans here I just knew that I wanted needed a new larger potting bench.
It’s raining all weekend {um, like the world stops} and you can surely make this in 48 hours, right?…were my words to Mr. Denim.
Wise man that he is {since I seem to be the chef in our world and he’s always hungry} he said OK.
I shoulda known better about the 48 hour part, though. Hahahahaha.
But I’m not complaining. I LOVE this new potting bench!
The Pottery Barn catalog photo below from a few years back was my inspiration…um yeah…it’s been tacked on my bulletin board for over a year. {Let me say off topic here that what you see daily has a way of finding its way into your life oftentimes…nuff said}. And just in case you were wondering, the current version is here and.very.pricey! Concrete top or not.
So…our new DIY cutie only cost about $100 in lumber and $15 in hooks. Win!
We made a few revisions/modifications to suit its location and my needs.
We made it slightly smaller to fit the space.
We did not add a cut out for a tub, even though I ordered one from Amazon. We might put it in later.
We also kept the shelf back low so we could see out to the garden and pond.
We countersunk the screws and put in darker wood filler to make them look like wood plugs.
{None of that is necessary at all, but since we see this bench 100 times a day I wanted it to look kinda unique and cool}
We upped the lower shelf about 4″ so it would not sit in puddled water. Rain and wind happens. It’s outside, otherwise a floor shelf as in the plans would be fine.
I stained it with a cedar stain and added hooks on the front for garden tools.
Gardeners simply cannot have enough hooks! Am I right? Totally…yes I am!
And there you have it!
SWOON!
MY NEW FAVORITE GARDEN TOOLS
GARDEN CULTIVATOR Love this wood handle. Rubber & plastic handles don’t last and get so yucky.
GARDEN DIBBER I don’t know how I lasted this long without one. So good for transplanting seedlings!
GARDEN TROWEL Sturdy feel with a good grip.
GARDEN WEEDER Don’t use this often but it comes in handy when I need one.
1 ~ How cute is this? Pricey but love the drawers.
2 ~ This is the potting bench I’ve used for 4 years. A tad smaller than my new one but I used it all the time. Now I need to figure out where I can repurpose it. Hmmm, a bigger greenhouse Mr. Denim?
3 ~ This beefy cedar bench has a built in hinged wooden sink.
4 ~ The very basic & inexpensive industrial hooks I used for my bench.
5 ~ Almost put these on but decided to go with something smaller.
6 ~ For a more contemporary look these would be cool.
Go see Jim & Mary’s plans at Old World Garden Farms for a really nice potting bench plan!
Very easy!
Mr. Denim guarantees it 😉
Now get out there and build something!

I’m envious! When are you going into full production mode and selling the tables on Amazon or DIY? Great job starting from a great 💡 idea.
Thanks, Robbie :). We had fun making it and I’m really going to enjoy it this summer!
