Hello friends!
Here we are in this last week in May…can you believe it?
Should I admit that I’m already kinda overwhelmed with the garden…and it’s not even officially summer???
I love being in my happy place but when I look around I see more work than I want…haha…it’s too hot here already at the 48th parallel and not even officially summer yet.
What happened to spring? People and plants DO NOT like going from cold to hot…hear that Mother Nature?
Let me show you how things are going here in my little {hot} garden…
Here is my pride and joy {planted last October}…hehe…please let me call it that! I simply love {hardneck} garlic and cannot wait to harvest the scapes for pesto and then enjoy the garlic. YUMMO.
{did you know…one minced garlic clove, swallowed with water and first thing in the morning…does wonders for gut health?}
In the bed next to the garlic are green cabbages. You will notice plenty of marigolds {not all flowered yet} interspersed with all my veggies…as well as straw used as mulch. I’m concerned that the heat will not be good for the cabbage so I’ll be covering them with shade cloth. I’ll plant again for a fall crop just in case.
This pic almost makes me cry! I planted 6 cucumbers here a few weeks ago…and the heat killed 4 of them. I’ll have 6 more starts soon to replace the ones I lost. In the meantime…here’s what I’m doing…
…yep, shade cloth and clothespins 😉
These clumps of green are celery…my experimental crop this summer…they’ll be under the cucumber trellis so I’ll see how that goes. Too much shade or just right? I’ll find out.
{No, you’re not going wonky…I took this pic before I put up the shade cloth}
Onions! Anyone else love onion soup in the winter? Me too.
The red and white onions came up just fine, but in the middle were Walla Wallas…and they didn’t come up! Yesterday I planted more white onions in the middle where the Walla Wallas should have been. I will mis the WW…they’re so sweet and delicious…but don’t store well, so whatever;)
The potatoes are coming up beautifully! I debated planting potatoes…they’re cheap and easy to find {altho I only grow organic and non-gmo}…I compromised and planted less…Red Norland in one 4 x 4 bed and Yukon Gold in the other 4 x 4 bed. So I’ll have less this year. But oh my…I’m kinda neglecting them but they’re doing better than in the last few years. WIN!
Have you ever discovered that what you “neglect” actually thrives and vice versa? Weird, huh?
My pole beans recently planted…interspersed with marigolds and a few sunflowers. I bought some different pole bean trellises this year…I do love bean teepees…so cute…but I can’t reach and grab beans inside them!
So even tho these were on the expensive side I’m going to try them. Another experiment, yeah. Beans are a total favorite edible of mine…can’t do without them.
I’ll leave you with a photo of the garlic chives {enuf pics for one post…I’m thinking of you!}…oh so pretty…even tho gardeners complain how invasive they are. I don’t care. They’re too pretty. When I took this photo there were 8 bumblebees hovering over them. YES!
How is your garden doing? Are you feeling overwhelmed yet? Or is it just me? Ha! Let me know!
Be back soon for Part 2…and then Part 3 in the greenhouse.
Hope you have a delightful last week of May…but oh boy hope you’re not in Ohio or Kansas. Please be safe. This weather is totally not normal. Nuff said.
PS…Follow me on Instagram for more daily excitement!
I am so impressed with what you have going already! Your garden is amazing and so beautiful, such a work of art! We’re not doing a garden this year so I am enjoying yours and I can’t wait to see more! Stay cool.😎
Thanks, Krissy! You give me encouragement to keep plodding thru the summer with the heat 😉 Every year is so different…keeps a gardener on her toes…haha.
